TRX Suspension Training

TRX stands for Total Body Resistance Exercise

Yes, you might have heard that the TRX Suspension Trainer was developed for the Navy SEALs, but don’t let that scare you! You don’t have to be in military Marine shape to work out with TRX. Simply put, the TRX suspension training has two cables that you use on your feet or hands to partially suspend your body and use your own body weight as resistance. The muscle groups you work depend on how hard you want to work which depends on the positioning of your body on the cables.

1. It’s for Everyone: So, who should do TRX? Everyone! At Longevita, we use the principles of Yoga and Pilates while using the TRX tool. If you love Pilates and Yoga, you will love the TRX as there are crossovers. But it’s also great for runners, golfers, swimmers, rehab, and much more!
2. Beginners to Advance: In a TRX class — it’s easy to tweak exercises to your own level of difficulty and ramp up when necessary. You determine how hard or how easy you really want to go.
3. The cardio-strength training: You will break a sweat – and remember you control the intensity. Where Yoga and Pilates differ from TRX is that the TRX targets different parts of your body while also raising your heartbeat. Many exercises done on the TRX integrate so many muscles, such as the “global movers – which is where Yoga/Pilates differ for the most part. These muscles increase your heartbeat and breath.

4. So Many Workout Variations: The TRX is great for rehab to athletic training, from stretching to circuit training. Planks, lunges, squats, upper body resistance, and everything in between.

5. What to wear: Wear workout shoes and comfortable, tight fitting clothing that won’t get in your way. Bring your mat, water bottle, and a towel, because you will be sweating. Here are a few tips as a beginner:

  • How to set up: Although your instructor will ensure you are set up properly, here are some tips:  Lie out your mat underneath the TRX straps, and double up mats if you have any knee issues. Be sure that your mat is in the center of the anchor point (where the suspension straps are attached). The TRX straps are designed to move up and down depending on the exercise. However, for beginner classes, we suggest adjusting the straps so the loops are barely touching the tops of your tennis shoes.
  • How to be aligned:  Always stay centered to the anchor point. No matter how far or back you are from the anchor point, make sure the middle of your chest runs across the same line as the anchor point. Stabilize the body by actively retaining the tension in the suspension straps. Avoid gripping the handles. Keep your knuckles, wrists, and elbows in a straight line. Here is where you will apply your Pilates and Yoga principles:  Keep your shoulders stabilized, neck lengthened, BREATHE, keep ribs connected and brace your abdominals.
  • What to expect: Prepare to take the exercises smaller than bigger.  Remember to listen to your body. Little by little you can train up to the full position. Never hold your breath. Breathe through the movement, and listen to your body if you need to take a break. Try to avoid comparing your level to the rest of the class. With time and practice, you will build strength and endurance.
