Barre

What is Barre?

Barre is an invigorating, physical, total body work out. It’s about lengthening and strengthening your muscles. You are, quite literally, worked from head to toe. During a typical barre class, you use a barre (hence the name), but barre class is a lot more than just using the barre and some fancy ballet moves. In fact, you don’t need to have any prior ballet dance experience. Barre is a low- impact work out which means anyone, regardless of body type, age or physical ability, can practice it on the regular.

The Technicalities

Barre is a combination of ballet, Pilates, and yoga. With this combination, you are able to achieve lean and sculpted muscles, in a dynamic way. Barre is very rhythmically inclined. The music is always upbeat and fast paced. This lively music serves as a motivational tool and keeps you engaged during your 60 minute class.

The Six Blocks

Barre encompasses six different blocks. This helps to instill structure within your class. The first block is the warm up, then we target the arms, next is the thigh sequence, then the glute section, after that is the ab block, and last but not least is the stretching block. These six fundamentals supply a foundation to work with, yet also foster authenticity to each class since all of the moves and exercises within the blocks can be varied. During these blocks, you will execute small, intentional, controlled movements, otherwise known as isometric movements. You will do a lot of pulsing, holding, and squeezing; this is where the change in your body occurs. It’s important you embrace the shaking of your muscles. In fact, exhausting your muscles in this way is completely natural. Uncontrollable quivering is a good thing, as you are deliberately forcing your muscles to tone up.

What Are the Benefits?

The objective of barre is total body toning and longer, leaner, stronger muscles. With that said, you will not “bulk up” if you take barre on a regular basis. This is because you use your own body weight and resistance rather than heavy weights.

If I practice Barre I will achieve…

  • Better posture
  • Increased flexibility
  • A greater range of motion and coordination
  • Overall wellness

What Do I Need?

The only thing you will need is your energy, your mat, and some slip- grip socks. These socks are the same as the typical yoga sock. Some of them have the toes cut out. It’s all based on preference. What is most essential is that there is traction on the bottom of your socks.
